November Best Bets

We're guessing that everyone's still playing one of the biggest games ever made, but c'mon, it's not all about beatings and carjackings, right? Here are three no-brainer ways to game this month.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

PS2
Developer: Rockstar North
Publisher: Rockstar
Release Date: Now
Some may argue that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is full of more of the same stuff you've seen and done in previous installments. While that's true to some extent, who could have guessed there would be so much more of it to do? Aside from the fact that there are roughly three times as many square miles to traverse, you have more options to explore when you're out traversing that expanse. The visuals are improved and, thankfully, so are the controls -- while it's still far from perfect, at least it's now much easier to control your character while on foot, and driving any of the numerous vehicles is a complete thrill.

A few weak links aside, the voice acting performances are mostly high quality. Rough language usage has grown exponentially along with the level of violence, so this is definitely one to keep away from the kiddies. The margin for error in the missions is once again extremely small which can lead to some frustration. All in all, though, you get more than your money's worth, and nothing else has come close to the sheer variety of gameplay you'll find in San Andreas.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

PS2
Developer: Konami
Publisher: Konami
Release Date: November 17

The clock turns back to the 1960s, and the Cold War acts as the political backdrop in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The same sort of "sneaking around" gameplay is back, but now outdoor survival is a big key. That means hunting for food, using camouflage, and being aware of your surroundings, which can be more dangerous than the enemy troops. Once we get closer to the game's release, we'll update this space with the many reasons why MGS 3 is one of November's Best Bets.

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

GC
Developer: Retro Studios
Publisher: Nintendo
Release Date: November 15

Plenty of mysteries surrounding the origins of heroine Samus were revealed in Metroid Prime, and you can expect more revelations in this follow-up. Aside from the brand new story-line, look for multiplayer support by way of a four player split-screen mode. Stay tuned for more info on what has prompted us to place Metroid Prime 2: Echoes among the month's best.
